Introduction
Location data are among the most important fields in the National UFO Reporting Center (NUFORC) database, yet they are also one of its most persistent weaknesses. Many analyses of UFO sighting reports depend on knowing where an observation occurred so it can be compared with airports, military training areas, launch sites, satellite tracks, population density, and other real-world factors. When location information is limited to a town name, an approximate area, or a broadly geocoded point, apparent patterns can become misleading. A report that appears to occur near an air force base may in reality have been dozens of kilometres away, while a supposed cluster around an airport may partly reflect the way locations were recorded rather than where witnesses actually stood. For researchers using NUFORC as a dataset rather than a collection of individual stories, location precision is therefore a major source of uncertainty. Reporting Methods and Location Options
NUFORC’s modern reporting system explicitly asks witnesses to provide a sighting location and encourages them to be as precise as possible. The current form requests the location where the sighting occurred and allows a map-based location marker. NUFORC’s guidance states that observers should enter the address where the sighting occurred or drag a map pin to identify the specific location. [nuforc.org]nuforc.orgNUFORC Reports for State WANUFORC Reports for State WA. Link, Occurred, City, State, Country, Shape, Summary, Reported, Media, Explanatio…
In practice, however, the historical database contains reports submitted under different forms, standards, and technologies over many decades. Many publicly accessible records are organised around city, state, and country fields rather than exact coordinates. Researchers who create downloadable versions of NUFORC data often have to geocode reports afterwards by assigning latitude and longitude values to reported cities. Several public NUFORC-derived datasets describe their location information in terms of city-level records that were later standardised into coordinates. - Witness location: where the observer actually stood.
- Reported locality: the city or town entered into the database.
- Derived coordinate: a latitude and longitude assigned later by a researcher or data-cleaning project.
These three locations may not be identical. A witness might report a sighting from a rural area outside a municipality, while a cleaned dataset places the event at the geographic centre of the nearest town. The resulting coordinate can appear highly precise despite being only an approximation. Why City-Level Data Can Distort Proximity Analysis
The most common use of location data in UFO research is proximity analysis: measuring whether reports occur unusually often near certain facilities or activities. This is where location precision matters most.
Consider a report assigned to a city centre coordinate. If the city spans a large geographic area, the actual observer could have been many kilometres from that point. A report geocoded to a municipal centre might appear close to an airport, military installation, launch facility, or restricted airspace even when the witness was observing from a completely different location. The reverse can also occur: a genuine proximity relationship may disappear because all reports have been collapsed into a single city-level coordinate. [GitHub]github.comGitHubtimothyrenner/nuforc_sightings_data: Data collection and…The Nationa UFO Research Center (NUFORC) maintains an online database o… GitHub This problem becomes especially significant when analysts investigate: [github.com]github.comGitHubtimothyrenner/nuforc_sightings_data: Data collection and…The Nationa UFO Research Center (NUFORC) maintains an online database o…
- Military training ranges and test facilities.
- Civilian airports and major flight corridors.
- Space launch sites and rocket trajectories.
- Industrial facilities with bright lighting or aerial activity.
- Areas affected by satellite launches and Starlink visibility.
Many of these features operate on scales where a few kilometres can substantially change an interpretation. A report recorded only as occurring in a particular town may not support precise claims about nearby infrastructure. The Hidden Problem of Artificial Clusters
Maps of NUFORC reports can create a strong visual impression of hotspots. However, some apparent clusters may arise from reporting conventions rather than observation patterns.
When researchers convert city names into coordinates, multiple reports can be assigned to exactly the same point. A town that receives numerous reports over time may therefore appear as a dense concentration on a map even though witnesses were scattered throughout a much larger area. Projects that geocode NUFORC reports frequently acknowledge that standardisation and location enhancement are necessary steps because the original records do not always contain directly usable coordinates. [GitHub]github.comGitHubtimothyrenner/nuforc_sightings_data: Data collection and…The Nationa UFO Research Center (NUFORC) maintains an online database o…
This issue is particularly visible in:
- Rural counties with one dominant town name.
- Metropolitan areas where multiple suburbs are reported inconsistently.
- Historical reports lacking detailed address information.
- International reports where locality descriptions vary in quality.
The result is that visual clustering can sometimes reflect database structure as much as real observational geography. Analysts who treat every plotted point as an exact sighting location risk overstating the precision of their findings. Historical Reports Often Have the Largest Precision Gaps
Location quality is not uniform across the NUFORC archive. Older reports generally present greater challenges than recent submissions.
NUFORC’s database spans many decades and includes reports submitted long after the events they describe. Historical records frequently contain abbreviated location descriptions, outdated place names, or incomplete geographical information. Public datasets derived from NUFORC acknowledge that some older records contain obscured, missing, or incomplete location fields. [Kaggle]kaggle.comuding the time, location duration…Read more…
The problem becomes compounded when a sighting is reported years after it occurred. Witnesses may remember the town or region but not the precise observation point. Even if the narrative remains sincere, the geographic accuracy can deteriorate substantially over time. This makes historical hotspot analysis particularly vulnerable to location uncertainty. How Researchers Can Interpret Approximate Locations More Carefully
Location imprecision does not make NUFORC useless. It changes the level of confidence that can reasonably be assigned to geographic conclusions.
A cautious approach includes several practices:
Treat coordinates as estimates unless their source is known. Many publicly available NUFORC datasets include latitude and longitude values, but those coordinates are often generated through geocoding rather than supplied directly by witnesses. [GitHub]github.comGitHubtimothyrenner/nuforc_sightings_data: Data collection and…The Nationa UFO Research Center (NUFORC) maintains an online database o… [Kaggle]kaggle.comKaggleUFO SightingsSince the reports date back to the 20th century, some older data might be obscured. Data contains city, state, time, d…
Use distance bands rather than exact proximity claims. Instead of claiming a sighting occurred next to an airport or military facility, analysts can examine broader zones that account for location uncertainty. This reduces the risk of overinterpreting small differences. [PMC]pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.govThis research uses data from the National UFO Reporting Center (NUFORC) online. NUFORC was formed in 1974 and “…Read more…
Read the narrative text. Free-text descriptions sometimes contain geographic clues absent from structured fields, such as references to roads, coastlines, landmarks, mountains, or viewing directions. These details may provide a more realistic sense of location than the database coordinate alone. Separate exact-location reports from approximate-location reports. Analyses become more reliable when records with map-pinned locations, detailed addresses, or clearly identified observation points are distinguished from city-level entries. What Location Accuracy Can and Cannot Support
The strength of NUFORC’s location data lies in broad regional analysis rather than fine-grained geographic claims. The database can often support questions such as whether reports are concentrated in certain states, metropolitan regions, or population corridors. It is much less reliable for determining whether a particular report occurred within a few kilometres of a military installation, airport perimeter, or launch complex unless the underlying location information is exceptionally detailed. [PMC]pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.govThis research uses data from the National UFO Reporting Center (NUFORC) online. NUFORC was formed in 1974 and “…Read more… [GitHub]github.comufo reportsGitHubplanetsig/ufo-reportsNUFORC geolocated and time standardized ufo reports for close to a century of data. 80000 plus reports. - plan…
For that reason, location precision gaps should be viewed as a core analytical risk rather than a minor technical issue. In studies of UFO reports, the difference between a city-level approximation and a verified observation point can determine whether an apparent correlation reflects a genuine pattern or merely the limits of the underlying data.
