Introduction
Public MUFON case listings are useful, but they are only the visible tip of a much larger case record. A typical public snippet may provide a date, location, object description and a short witness narrative. What it usually does not show is the investigative work that determines whether a sighting remains unexplained, was misidentified, lacks sufficient evidence, or contains contradictions that emerged during follow-up. Understanding that gap is essential when using UFO databases as research tools. Public entries can help identify leads and patterns, but they rarely provide enough information to evaluate a case’s evidential strength on their own. A public MUFON entry generally functions as an intake record rather than a complete investigation. The information most commonly visible includes:

The problem is that a witness’s initial description is often the least reliable stage of an investigation. Witness interviews and clarification
Initial reports are often incomplete. Investigators may contact witnesses to clarify:
- Exact timelines.
- Viewing angles and directions.
- Weather and visibility conditions.
- Estimates of distance, size and speed.
- Whether multiple witnesses were present.
These follow-up conversations can significantly alter the interpretation of an event. One of the most important omissions is often the reasoning behind a final disposition.
MUFON describes its investigative approach as attempting to identify ordinary explanations where possible. Why missing context can change a case’s meaning
A reader encountering a public UFO report often sees only the witness’s account. What remains hidden may be the very information needed to assess credibility.
Consider a hypothetical public entry describing a silent light that hovered for several minutes. The missing investigator file could contain:
- Flight-tracking data showing nearby aircraft.
- Astronomical data matching a bright planet.
- Contradictory witness statements gathered later.
- Evidence that the duration estimate changed substantially during interviews.
- Metadata showing that an image was taken under conditions different from those initially described.
Any one of those findings could substantially alter how the report should be interpreted.
The reverse can also occur. Some public snippets appear ordinary until investigators uncover multiple witnesses, supporting media or corroborating observations from different locations.
